Hand-Held Hedge Trimmer Training
Our LANTRA-accredited Hand-Held Hedge Trimmer training course is a practical, one-day programme designed for operators using combi tools, dedicated hedge trimmers, or long-reach machines in agriculture, horticulture, landscaping, and grounds maintenance.
Hand-held hedge trimmers are versatile and effective but require careful handling to avoid accidents. This course teaches safe and confident operation, with a focus on correct maintenance and understanding the capabilities and limitations of your equipment. It’s an ideal course for those looking to update skills or stay current with work-based health and safety requirements. (Please note, this course does not cover working at height.)
Delivered by experienced instructors, training covers all health and safety regulations, practical operation, site organisation, and equipment checks. Upon successful completion of the integrated training and assessment, learners receive a LANTRA Certificate of Competence, recognised throughout the land-based industries.
Training takes place at our GVA Training Centre in Halifax, with flexible on-site delivery options for businesses and organisations.
What will be covered?

- Produce a site-specific risk assessment for hedge trimmer operations
- Identify the necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required
- Identify the health and safety features required on a hedge trimmer
- Identify defects on a hedge trimmer and decide which the operator can remedy and which require a service engineer’s attention
- Correctly carry out all routine maintenance in accordance with the machine manufacturer’s information and/or this workbook
- Prepare the hedge trimmer for use with the correct fuel/oil mix
- Start the hedge trimmer from both hot and cold start in a safe manner
- State the possible hazards/risks when carrying out maintenance or operational tasks
- Maintain the hedge trimmer in a safe and efficient working condition
- Adjust the hedge trimmer for safe and comfortable operation where a harness is used
- Operate the hedge trimmer in a safe manner, having regard for the safety of the public, property and environmental factors
- Organise the site and use a systematic method of working where possible
