Giving Christmas Trees a Second Life: Working Together for People, Planet and Community
At GVA, sustainability isn’t a slogan — it’s a responsibility we live every day. That’s why we’re proud to support local community-led Christmas tree recycling initiatives across West Yorkshire, helping ensure that festive trees are disposed of safely, responsibly and with the environment firmly in mind.
This January, households across the region chose to donate their Christmas trees through collections organised by Huddersfield North Scouts and Forget Me Not Trust, a charity supporting children and families across the region. Once collected, GVA was responsible for the professional handling and environmentally responsible disposal of the trees.
Supporting Community Action
Huddersfield North Scouts once again ran their popular annual Christmas tree collection service, raising vital funds while helping households recycle their trees conveniently after the festive season. At the same time, Forget Me Not Trust offered a collection service in exchange for a donation, turning post-Christmas waste into meaningful support for families across West Yorkshire.
These initiatives demonstrate the power of local action — communities coming together to reduce waste, raise funds and make a positive environmental impact.
Responsible Recycling, Delivered Safely
As specialists in vegetation management and environmental services, GVA ensured that the collected trees were processed in line with best practice and strict safety standards.
Every tree was recycled rather than sent to landfill. Many were chipped and reused within natural landscaping projects, supporting habitat creation and soil protection. Some recycled material was also supplied for use at Ogden Water, where it contributes to natural barrier construction. This technique works with the landscape to manage erosion and protect sensitive environments.
While it isn’t possible to confirm how many individual trees were used for each end purpose, every tree handled by GVA was treated with the same commitment to environmental responsibility and resource efficiency.
Sustainability in Action
This work reflects our wider commitment to:
- Reducing waste and promoting circular use of natural materials
- Supporting biodiversity and natural landscape solutions
- Working collaboratively with charities, volunteers and local organisations
- Delivering safe, professional and fully accredited environmental services
From tree care and vegetation management to biodiversity and Net Zero commitments, our approach is always rooted in balancing human needs with the health of the natural world.
Thank You
We’d like to thank Huddersfield North Scouts, Forget Me Not Trust, their volunteers, and everyone who donated a tree this year. Together, small actions — like recycling a Christmas tree — contribute to a bigger picture of sustainability, community support and environmental stewardship.
At GVA, we’re proud to play our part.
Testimonial
“I am writing on behalf of Huddersfield North Scouts to say thank you once again for you and your company’s tremendous support for our annual Christmas Tree collection.
It goes without saying that without your loan of equipment and facility for recycling the trees we would not be able to undertake this event which is our main fundraising initiative of the year. This year was our 21st year of collecting. We collected over 500 trees and have managed to raise over £3,000 to support the work of scout groups working with young people to give them skills for life.
Thank you once again.”
