Inspiring the Next Generation of Highways Professionals
At GVA, we believe that safer highways and greener spaces start with people – and that includes inspiring the next generation who will care for and shape the infrastructure of the future.
On 6th March, two members of the GVA team attended the National Highways North East Careers Day at Newcastle College, joining organisations from across the network to showcase the wide range of careers within the highways industry.
The event formed part of National College Week 2026 and welcomed over 600 students from local primary and secondary schools. Secondary school groups attended in the morning, followed by enthusiastic primary school pupils in the afternoon – all eager to learn about the industries that help keep the UK moving safely.
Showcasing Careers Behind the Network
The highways sector offers far more career opportunities than many young people realise. From environmental specialists and vegetation management teams to engineers, ecologists and apprentices starting their careers, the industry is full of pathways that combine technology, environmental responsibility and hands-on work.
Throughout the day, organisations involved in the National Highways North East community demonstrated tools, equipment and innovative technologies used to manage and maintain the UK’s road infrastructure.
Bringing the Work to Life
Nothing sparks curiosity like seeing the tools of the trade up close.
The GVA team spent the day speaking with students about the real-world challenges of highway vegetation management, explaining everything from robotic mowing technology to tackling issues such as ash dieback.
One of the highlights of the day was demonstrating the Robo Mower, which quickly became a favourite among younger visitors.
“The demo of the robo mower was great – the primary school kids loved it!”

Moments like these bring the industry to life, helping young people see how technology, environmental care and practical skills come together in the highways sector.
Inspiring Future Talent
At GVA, we are passionate about working in harmony with nature while supporting the infrastructure that keeps communities connected. Events like the Newcastle College Careers Day allow us to share that passion and show students how their interests – whether in engineering, the environment, technology or outdoor work – can translate into meaningful careers.
The highways industry relies on collaboration, innovation and a new generation of skilled professionals. By engaging with students today, we hope to inspire the environmentalists, engineers and infrastructure specialists of tomorrow.
Because building a safer, greener travel infrastructure isn’t just about the roads we manage today – it’s about the people who will shape them in the future.
